Kevin Rafferty's docu-collage does for smoking what his Atomic Cafe (1982) did for the bomb and cold war hysteria. The Last Cigarette is a grimly funny look at the mythology and mystique of tobacco. The spine of this film is footage from the 1994 congressional hearings during which the chief executives of the tobacco companies covered their butts. You be the judge on who is more maddening: the suits who steadfastly insist that nicotine is not addictive, or relentless committee chairman Rep. Henry Waxman, a one-man Spanish Inquisition. Presented as ironic counterpoint are vintage Hollywood film clips, 1950s cigarette commercials ("Smoking is not intoxicating, smoking does not impair judgment"), anti-smoking PSAs (including one featuring John Cleese), and educational films. In a scene from a Christopher Columbus biopic, the explorer comes upon Native Americans smoking. He sneers, "You'd never see a civilized man doing that." But clip after clip show virile icons (John Wayne), hipster saints (Robert Mitchum), and screen sirens (Rita Hayworth) making smoking look cool and glamorous. In one illuminating interview, ad legend Leo Burnett recalls the creation of the Marlboro Man to combat the brand's "sissy" image. As The Last Cigarette gains momentum, Rafferty throws into the mix news footage chronicling increasing hostilities between smokers and nonsmokers. But the most intriguing parts are clips from "smokespolitation" films, which (no joke!) consist simply of fully clothed women smoking. "You're here to see the smoke, aren't you?" one purrs. "Well, I'm here to show it to you." This is probably the wrong movie for those trying to kick the habit. But as social history and commentary, The Last Cigarette is no drag.
